Welcome to Stockaholics and my Top PIcks thread! I am basically a swing trader and have long term holds as well. When the opportunity presents itself I will play some of the same stocks in my long position. In this choppy market I also buy in tiers to get the best price. My hold time on a swing trade lately has been from a couple days to a week or so. My most profitable swing trades this year have been: ELP, BBD, WPX, MBT, and MPEL ELP and BBD are Brazilian stocks so you need to keep a close eye on the government turmoil taking place over there as it does effect the stock movement.. I will try to explain more on that later. Feel free to post your own picks for discussion. . .
I'm glad I found you Tip. I followed your lead and took profits on ELP and bought WPX. Looking to see what your next move is
Welcome back tip. I ran with you back in the day and played LVS right along with you. Still the best trade I've ever had; by far. Good to see you again
Hey SJ and FastEddy and I am glad you took some profits on ELP, with the help of the market it may be time for a reload today. A 1st tier buy on ELP @7.92 would be a good starting point. With oil weak WPX is up a few cents and if goes at or near 7 a few chips off the table may be in order. It's good to hear from you Trenticalx. Looking back we played F in 2009/2010, that was some fun times and I agree, LVS was the best! Spec play AMD is up again possibly on more rumors. My calls have been starting to climb. My long LVLT was up this morning when the market was down, always a good sign. It has been my best long since LVS and MPEL in the glory days.
I forgot all about F, now I remember being pissed that I sold it way too early. Well hopefully we have some more winners in the near future
I am away from home right now and found a wifi connection for my Chromebook. Nice meltdown today and with that I am on a shopping spree. Will give details later. . .
It paid off today getting to the dance late as there was bargains galore> I can’t provide the link as HSM is down but last week I said I sold half my MPEL position on weak revenue numbers from Macau. I did this with the intention to buy them back later at a cheaper price and that happened today as I bought back one half from that sale and I am holding the other half of that sale for another meltdown or a possible downgrade on MPEL. I feel like that is a win win proposition. Instead of taking profits on WPX it went down on oil and I made my 2nd tier buy. I also made 2nd tier buys on ELP and BBD as they got hammered today. I was able to get all of these near their LOD”s. I still have a 1.80 bid on SID for a gap play that rg recommended. It is a hot little Brazilian stock that always seems to bounce back.
Are ELP and BBD long term holds for you or just swings? I like them but wouldn't mind an entry closer to those mid-March prices
Not at this time Trenticalx, ELP and BBD have been good swing trades for me. They are both holding up well this morning in a down market. They are also both Brazilian stocks and the government turmoil over there effects the stock swings. Both companies have good fundamentals and dividends and might be good for a long term hold if the government gets under control. I posted in the WPX thread this morning that WPX got a upgrade this morning and my thoughts are in that thread. Moving good in a down market. (has been a another great swing play for me)
I'm mostly into swings nowadays, don't trust holding anything real long term and I'm just too busy to really day trade anymore. So keep the swing ideas coming
Nice chart SJ! I wrote this yesterday> With the market meltdown today I have been able to buy back 3/4's of the MPEL shares I sold at a much lower price. I am saving the other 1/4 in case there is a further drop. MPEL did not drop as much as I expected with the meltdown today and only lost a penny in AH on decent volume. MPEL is 2.63% away from the 50 Day MA @16.07 and not much of a pop is needed to turn bullish. I think if we get some market it goes up. More info on Gaming Stocks including WYNN http://stockaholics.net/threads/gaming-stocks.134/ WPX got a upgrade this morning and was up for awhile but no change in price @6.34 in a down market. But is was up 3.31% in AH on big volume @ $6.55* 0.21 +3.31% More info on WPX http://stockaholics.net/threads/wpx-wpx-energy-inc.136/#post-531 ELP and BBD held up decent in a down market and was even up now and then BBD - .05 @7.25 (0.68%) ELP - .11 @7.47 (1.45%) Futures are oil are both up decent right now if they can hold maybe a rally tomorrow
Good summary! Market does look good here, Im just going to watch TSLA as my leading indicator here, as long as people are diving into that stock and making it go higher, I know that there is risk appetite! So you really like MPEL .. again!
I like MPEL about 6 months out as Beijing opens more doors to Macau. It has started already with lessening on Visa restrictions and such. As Wynn's new casino is delayed on construction woes that is good for MPEL's market share. I have done well trading MPEL this year as I build a position and the dividends are good at .65 per quarter and hopefully they keep that up. I do have a stop in place in case things should go south. I also like MGM as things are heating up in Vegas but I don't currently own any. About WYNN's $90 dollar channel from the other thread it did not hold up good in AH if you want to check the Gaming thread.
ELP and BDD were down on more government turmoil as some think the Brazil president will not get impeached but from what I have read it is a 60-70% she will be impeached. There is also a move to impeach the vice president as the soap opera continues. I am still up a little on ELP and down a little on BBD. They were not down enough for me to make another tier buy. I bought T (AT&T) after they raised their divi's to .48 per quarter for a 4.9% yield. Had to buy in before the 8th to get paid on May 2nd. I sold 1/4 of my WPX and more details below as well as the gaming stocks that were down slightly today. I bought some 01/20/2017 5.50 calls on AMD at .11. The other spec play S continues to head north @3.59 with a HOD of 3.64 WPX http://stockaholics.net/threads/wpx-wpx-energy-inc.136/#post-953 Gaming Stocks http://stockaholics.net/threads/gaming-stocks.134/#post-921 AMD http://stockaholics.net/threads/amd-advanced-micro-devices-inc.39/#post-862
Well, every thing I had in my portfolio was red today except MPEL. I thought ELP and BBD held decently in another market meltdown and impeachment is not solidified yet on the Brazil President. The spec plays S and AMD did not farewell. WPX was down on oil but I think it will rebound when oil conditions are right. I am now upside down on F but because my dividends have been compounding for the last 7 years I am in pretty good shape. Time will tell if I made the right decision but I was not happy with the insider selling of LVLT so I decided to change horses and with that I bought T from the sale of LVLT yesterday. I was going to set a stop but decided to sell when it was still up a little. Reason for changing, T has been on a nice uptrend and has a dividend yield of about 5%. Then I got a little lucky and T got a target price increase from $40 to $44 after the bell from Jeffrey's. I thought it had gained strength only losing 5 cents in down market.
