Bullish folks can look for stocks outperforming S&P under the theory that rising tides float all boats. Contrarian folks look at the weaker areas for turnarounds. Check First Call Most Recommended looking at number of analysts and upward revisions. Check First Call Earnings Surprises for recently reported positive and negative surprises.
