Terna SpA is an electricity transmission system operator that owns virtually all of the Italian National Transmission Grid.

With a monopoly under an Italian government license, Terna transmits and dispatches electricity throughout the country.

It is also responsible for the planning, construction, and maintenance of the nation's electrical grid.

Terna segments its operations into its Regulated Activities, Non-Regulated Activities, and International Activities.

The company generates the vast majority of its revenue from charging transmission fees as a part of its Regulated Activities.

Under its Non-Regulated Activities, Terna mainly produces and sells electricity transformers.

The company has also made efforts to expand its operations into Italy's neighboring countries and North Africa.

    Project Development

Terna, the operator of the Italian national electricity grid, will begin the last phase of work to modernise the 220 kV Naples Centre - Astroni underground power line tomorrow. This includes the replacement of 9.3 km of existing oil-insulated cable with an XLPE cable, technology that is more efficient and advanced and that requires less maintenance. The work is expected to last for 30 days, and the technicians will operate mainly during the day with specific activities carried out at night.

For the entire time that the construction sites will be in operation, Terna, working closely with the Prefecture of Naples and E-Distribuzione, will take the necessary measures to ensure the continuity and efficiency of the energy transmission service in the area affected by the works.

As provided for in the protocol agreed by Terna and the Municipality of Naples in 2020, these works are part of an extensive plan currently under way to overhaul the electricity grid in the metropolitan area. This plan, when completed, will make the electricity transmission service more efficient and sustainable by modernising the existing underground cables. The agreement also provides for the demolition of 10 km of 60 kV overhead power lines in the city of Naples, which will leave around 25 hectares of land free from the impact of the existing electricity infrastructure.

Terna, which manages 3,500 km of high and extra-high-voltage lines and 60 electrical substations in the region, is rolling out its 2021-2025 “Driving Energy” Business Plan and will invest over € 1 billion in Campania to develop the resilience of the local electricity grid in the context of the energy transition promoted by the company. The planned works will involve over 350 companies and 1500 personnel.

TERNA: MONITORING OF 1,690 KM OF THE ELECTRICITY GRID IN CAMPANIA COMPLETED

Terna has completed its monitoring activities of the overhead electricity grid in Campania. Over 1,690 km of cable were inspected in just 9 days, encompassing a total of 107 power lines of 70, 150, 220 and 380 kV. The activities were coordinated by the Asset Management department of Italy's national electricity grid operator and were carried out by operational teams from its South Department using the Ecureil AS350 helicopter owned by the Group.

Terna technicians conducted a comprehensive analysis of the regional grid in all five provinces in the Campania region, checking for any defects on the conductors and pylons to ensure that the service is operating to its full efficiency. Overall, by the end of March the company headed by Stefano Antonio Donnarumma will inspect 6,100 km of overhead power line in the South Department, which in addition to Campania will include Basilicata, Apulia and Calabria.

Continuous power line monitoring is a priority for Italy’s grid operator, which invests a total of around € 50 million in this activity every year. In order to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the grid, Terna has a fleet of seven helicopters with state-of-the-art technology able to provide an overview of the data in real time, reducing the time it takes to monitor the electricity grids.

Aerial inspections make it possible to analyse around 240 km of lines per day, as opposed to 15 km for ground level inspections, which nonetheless remain an essential tool to enable the detection of anomalies that cannot be detected from above. By the end of 2022, Terna will have carried out overflights and inspections on more than 44,000 km of high-voltage power lines with infra-red technology.

Once the aerial inspections are complete the data is analysed and processed using a DSS (Decision Support System) IT system which provides proactive support to the plant maintenance decision-making process, proposing inspections, maintenance works and asset replacements according to schedules that follow an established policy.

In order to manage this highly technological equipment, dozens of professionals from Terna’s Plant Units located throughout Italy underwent a period of training at the company’s training centre - purpose-built with all the equipment needed for the various simulations on board the helicopter - obtaining the qualification of “helicopter inspection specialist” upon completion.
