    Economic news:

US: Two Federal Reserve officials said on Monday that the U.S. economy is growing rapidly and that while the labour market still has room for improvement, inflation is already at a level that could satisfy one leg of a key test for the beginning of interest rate hikes.

Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Raphael Bostic said he is eyeing the fourth quarter for the start of a bond-purchase taper but is open to an even earlier start if the job market keeps up its recent torrid pace of improvement. Moreover, he and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin both said they believe inflation has already achieved the Fed’s 2% threshold, according to their separate assessments. That is one of two requirements to be met before rate hikes can be considered.

Their remarks are a sign that as Fed officials hold discussions about how and when to taper their asset purchases, they are also getting more detailed in their debate about what it will take to satisfy the Fed’s inflation target under the new framework.

Bostic, who has already pencilled in late 2022 for the start of rate hikes, pointed to the five-year annual average for the core personal consumption expenditures index, or core PCE inflation, which by his calculation reached 2% in May.

Eurozone: Britain imposed sanctions on Belarus’s potash and petroleum product exports on Monday in an attempt to put pressure on President Alexander Lukashenko, who swiftly retorted that London should “choke on” the new measures.

So far Western sanctions have done little to persuade Lukashenko, in power in the former Soviet republic since 1994, to change course from a crackdown on his political opponents.

The British sanctions, which prohibited the purchase of transferable securities and money-market instruments issued by the Belarusian state and its state-owned banks, are the latest sanctions imposed by the West over Lukashenko’s crackdown.

The package also includes measures to prevent Belarusian air carriers from overflying or landing in the United Kingdom and a prohibition on the provision of technical assistance to Lukashenko’s fleet of luxury aircraft.

State-owned Belaruskali is the world’s top potash producer and accounts for a fifth of the global potash trade.

    Economic news:

US: Hours after the U.S. Senate approved a $3.5 trillion budget blueprint chock-full of investments in new domestic programs, fissures emerged between the moderate and liberal wings of the Democratic Party over the size and scope of the spending.

Senator Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat representing the conservative-leaning state of West Virginia, issued a warning shortly after the Senate early on Wednesday passed the budget deal that would carry out President Joe Biden’s top priorities.

Manchin, who often acts as a bridge between his party and Republicans, voiced concerns about potentially “grave consequences” for the nation’s debt as well as Washington’s ability to respond to other potential crises.

That followed Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s warning that she does not support the $3.5 trillion price tag but would work “in good faith” to develop an alternative to include in implementing legislation.

Eurozone: Britain imposed sanctions on Belarus’s potash and petroleum product exports on Monday in an attempt to put pressure on President Alexander Lukashenko, who swiftly retorted that London should “choke on” the new measures.

    Economic news:

US: President Joe Biden on Thursday called on U.S. lawmakers to enact legislation aimed at lowering drug prices, including allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices and imposing penalties on drugmakers that hike prices faster than inflation.

The Democratic president’s remarks laid out his vision to help reduce the costs for prescription medications as part of the Build Back Better agenda he is seeking to push through Congress as the nation continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers have earned high praise for quickly developing vaccines against the novel coronavirus. But the outbreak of the highly contagious disease, which upended the economy and has so far killed more than 617,000 people in the United States, also drew renewed attention to healthcare costs.

Biden on Thursday lauded drugmakers for their life-saving work developing the COVID-19 vaccines.

Eurozone: Some of the European Union’s biggest banks are holding less capital than they should by using transactions to temporarily compress their balance sheets, a research paper from the Bank for International Settlements said on Thursday.

After several banks had to be rescued by taxpayers during the global financial crisis over a decade ago, global regulators now designate the biggest among them as globally systemic banks or G-SIBs to face tougher capital rules.

Each year, G-SIBs are slotted into buckets, with tougher rules for those in the higher buckets.

The paper from the BIS, a forum for central banks based in Basel, Switzerland, said “window dressing” or using transactions to compress assets and liabilities at the end of the year, is blurring data used by regulators and thus affecting the actions they take.

The volume and riskiness of assets and liabilities determine how much capital must be held, but banks are able to “manage down” their G-SIB score and reduce their capital surcharges, the paper said.

    Economic news:

US: U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told lawmakers Sunday that she had asked a House committee to advance both a $1 trillion infrastructure plan and a $3.5 trillion spending package together, an apparent effort to patch up divisions that had threatened to stall President Joe Biden’s legislative priorities.

The U.S. Senate approved both the infrastructure legislation and the outline of a separate plan loaded with investments in new domestic programs. But the combined price tag of the two measures created fissures between the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party, which controls both chambers of Congress by narrow margins.

Eurozone: The European Central Bank is likely to announce long-awaited plans to reduce its pandemic-related asset purchases in the next quarter, according to a Reuters poll of economists, most of whom expected the programme to be wrapped up by the end of March.

With the euro zone economy growing at its fastest pace on record and inflation set to rise further, pressure on the ECB to taper its Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme (PEPP) is building, as it is on other major central banks. [ECILT/US]

“While the ECB will start discussing phasing out PEPP in September, no decision will be made until December,” wrote George Buckley, chief UK and euro area economist at Nomura, in a note to clients.

“However, we see risks to this view. As COVID-19 cases rise, and uncertainty about the future of the virus in autumn remains, the ECB may want to continue purchases at the current rate until the end of the year, to prevent an unwarranted rise in yields.”

    Economic news:

US: Boston Federal Reserve Bank President Eric Rosengren said on Monday that one more month of strong job gains could satisfy the U.S. central bank’s requirements for beginning to reduce its monthly asset purchases.

“We’ve had two months in a row where we’ve created more than 900,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dropped by half a percent to 5.4%,” Rosengren said during an interview with CNBC. “If we get another strong labor market report, I think that I would be supportive of announcing in September that we are ready to start the taper program.”

Fed officials said in December that they would continue purchasing assets at the current pace of $120 billion a month until there is “substantial further progress” toward the central bank’s goals for inflation and employment.

Rosengren said he believed the standard was already met for inflation, which is running slightly above the Fed’s 2% target. The policymaker repeated his view that he would support reducing the purchases of mortgage-backed securities and Treasury securities by equal amounts. He said the program should be completed by the middle of next year.

Eurozone: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson intends to host a virtual meeting of G7 leaders to tackle the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and has stepped up efforts to evacuate UK nationals and others from Kabul.

Johnson spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday to agree how the two countries could work together to recognise any future Afghan government and in trying to prevent a humanitarian and refugee crisis, his office said.

The G7 call is expected to happen in coming days, while the two leaders also agreed that their countries should work together at the U.N. Security Council, including on a possible joint resolution.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Western partners would also look at imposing sanctions and withholding aid if the Taliban failed to uphold human rights or allowed the country to become a base for terrorism again.

“It is not what we wanted,” Raab said. “But we have to deal with a new reality, we’re making it clear with our partners, with all the means at our disposal, that we will hold the Taliban to account to its commitments to have a new start in Afghanistan.”

    Economic news:

US: Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen termed the Biden administration’s two-track legislative push for major spending bills on infrastructure and social programs as “the most important economic project in recent history,” countering objections that the bills will amount to “overinvesting.”

In an opinion piece published by Yahoo Finance, Yellen said the Senate’s votes this month in favor of a $550 billion infrastructure bill and a $3.5 trillion budget resolution that opens the way for expanded outlays on social programs, would help reverse decades of underinvestment in priorities like infrastructure, education and childcare. The House of Representatives is set to take up the measures this fall.

While Republicans joined Democrats in advancing the infrastructure bill, they have opposed the social-spending package, citing concerns about record U.S. debt levels and a surge in inflation they say has already been fueled by fiscal transfers to American households.

Yellen countered that Biden’s economic agenda “will bolster our economic growth and productivity, while bringing down some of the largest cost drivers for American families.”

Eurozone: The United Kingdom said on Tuesday it aims to start negotiations for a trade agreement with India by the end of the year.

“We are currently in the pre-negotiation scoping phase of an FTA (free trade agreement), with the aim of starting negotiations by the end of this year,” a spokesperson for Britain’s Department for International Trade said.

“With bilateral trade valued at 23 billion pounds ($31.60 billion) in 2019, a trade deal with India will help boost British exports through lower tariffs and increased investment opportunities,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

A trade accord with India is seen as a key target for post-Brexit Britain. Prime Minister Boris Johnson reluctantly called off a trip to the capital Delhi in April this year after COVID-19 cases spiraled across India.

Since completing its exit from the European Union at the end of last year, Britain has been keen to secure trade deals and is particularly pursuing ties with nations in the Indo-Pacific region, home to some of the fastest-growing economies.

    Economic news:

US: The U.S. economy likely created 166,000 fewer jobs in the 12 months through March than previously estimated, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Wednesday.

The reading is a preliminary estimate of the BLS’ annual “benchmark” revision to the closely watched payrolls data. The leisure and hospitality sector, which was hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, accounted for the bulk of the revision, with employment growth revised down by 597,000 or 4.6%.

Leisure and hospitality employment is 1.7 million below its peak in February 2020, though the industry has led the labor market recovery from the pandemic.

“It is somewhat ambiguous what this means for future employment in this sector beyond March 2021,” said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) in New York.

“This could suggest that more jobs need to be added to return closer to pre-pandemic levels but also that the pandemic-related hit to that sector was more severe and or longer-lasting than previously reported.”

Eurozone: British house prices rose in June at the fastest annual rate since 2004 as the market surged ahead of a phasing out of a tax break on property purchases, official data showed on Wednesday.

House prices were 13.2% higher than in June 2020, the Office for National Statistics said, following a 9.8% annual increase in May.

Finance minister Rishi Sunak cut stamp duty, a tax on house purchases, in July 2020. But from last month it started to return to its pre-pandemic level.

The tax cut aimed to reverse a slump in property sales at the start of the pandemic, and helped fuel a surge in property prices and some new construction. Many households were already seeking more spacious housing suited to working from home.

“Prices went berserk as the stamp duty taper closed in,” said Lucy Pendleton from London-based estate agent James Pendleton.

    Economic news:

US: U.S. states can use federal pandemic-related funds passed this year to extend unemployment aid, President Joe Biden’s administration said on Thursday, saying the Delta variant impact on some local economies may mean people need help for longer.

“There are some states where it may make sense for unemployed workers to continue receiving additional assistance for a longer period of time, allowing residents of those states more time to find a job in areas where unemployment remains high,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and U.S. Labor Secretary Martin Walsh told congressional leaders in a letter.

“The Delta variant may also pose short-term challenges to local economies and labor markets,” they added.

Extra federal unemployment benefits will expire as planned on Sept. 6, they said. But states can tap funds from a law enacted in March called the American Rescue Plan, they told the heads of the Senate Finance Committee and the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee.

Eurozone: The European Central Bank’s new policy guidance can boost inflation expectations, paving the ground to higher interest rates down the line, the ECB’s chief economist Philip Lane said on Thursday.

“The systematic approach to monetary policy embedded in rate forward guidance has the capacity to boost inflation expectations and thereby strengthen inflation dynamics,” Lane said in a blog post.

“In turn, stronger inflation dynamics are the key to eventual normalisation of policy rates.”

    Economic news:

US: U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris met top leaders in Singapore on Monday on the first working day of her trip to Southeast Asia and struck partnerships to tackle cyber threats, supply disruptions and the COVID-19 pandemic – areas that have emerged as top priorities for President Joe Biden’s administration.

Harris met with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Halimah Yacob during a trip aimed at bolstering ties with partners in the region as part of Washington’s efforts to counter China’s growing economic and security influence.

Details of the meeting were shared by senior U.S. administration officials and Harris is expected to hold a press conference with Lee later on Monday. She will also visit the Changi Naval Base and tour the USS Tulsa combat ship.

Singapore is not a U.S. treaty ally, but remains one of its strongest security partners in the region with deep trade ties. However, it also seeks to balance its relationships with the United States and China by not taking sides.

Eurozone: Moscow pledged retaliatory measures after a new set of sanctions imposed by the United States on a Russian ship and two companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

The $11 billion project, which will double the existing Nord Stream pipeline across the Baltic Sea and allow Russia to bypass Ukraine when piping gas to Europe, has been a focal point of tensions between Moscow and Washington.

Washington imposed the sanctions on Friday on a ship, its owner and a construction company, but opponents of the project said the measures were insufficient to stop it.

The United States and Britain also imposed sanctions on Friday on men they said were Russian intelligence operatives responsible for the poisoning one year ago of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

“We view such hostile actions by the Biden administration as dictated by a lack of political will and an unwillingness to build U.S.-Russian relations on a partnership basis,” Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, was quoted as saying in the statement.

    Economic news:

US: Borrowings by U.S. companies for capital investments rose 9% in July from a year earlier, the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) said on Monday.

The companies signed up for $9.9 billion in new loans, leases and lines of credit last month, up from $9.1 billion a year earlier. However, borrowings fell 5% from the previous month.

“Despite supply chain disruptions in some sectors of the economy, signs of inflation, and the emergence of the Delta coronavirus, July new business volume in the equipment finance industry is strong,” ELFA Chief Executive Officer Ralph Petta said in a statement.

Petta also cited a pick-up in consumer spending and slowing unemployment as reasons to be optimistic about equipment investment and industry performance for the second half of the year.

Eurozone: Economic growth in Germany could miss projections this year and the resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic may put unexpected strain on the economy in the autumn, the Bundesbank said in a monthly report on Monday.

Europe’s biggest economy is expected to grow by 3.7% this year and 5.2% in 2022 but the early weeks of the rebound were more timid than projected and that will likely weigh on the full-year figure as well, the Bundesbank said.

Germany is still likely to have enjoyed robust expansion over the summer months, with services benefiting from the easing of restrictions as infection numbers declined, boosting tourism income.

While some restrictions could be reintroduced in the autumn if infections continue to rise, they are unlikely to be as strict as in the past given Germany’s progress in vaccinating its population, the Bundesbank added.

    Economic news:

US: The Biden administration said on Tuesday it would take steps to restart the federal oil and gas leasing program in the next week and plans to hold a Gulf of Mexico auction as soon as October, court papers showed.

The move comes two months after the U.S Interior Department first said it would comply with a June 15 federal judge’s order blocking its months-long pause in oil and gas leasing on federal lands and waters.

That order was a blow to a key White House effort to address climate change by reining in fossil fuel extraction.

U.S. President Joe Biden paused the oil and gas leasing program in January, pending an analysis of its impacts on the environment and value to taxpayers. Interior said in a statement that it is still conducting that review.

The filing to a Louisiana federal district court on Tuesday was in response to a motion by the state of Louisiana and 12 other states from earlier this month that sought to compel Interior to restart the leasing program and to show why it should not be held in contempt for failing to comply with the order issued weeks earlier.

Eurozone: The number of homes sold in the United Kingdom fell by more than half last month after the scaling-back of a tax break designed to encourage home purchases during the coronavirus crisis, official data showed on Tuesday.

Britain’s tax office said 73,740 homes were sold in July on a seasonally adjusted basis – 63% fewer than in June when buyers had rushed to complete sales before a COVID emergency tax break was reduced – although 4% more than in July 2020.

Sales were down 24% compared with the same month in 2019, before the pandemic.

British finance minister Rishi Sunak last year temporarily scrapped the stamp duty tax on the first 500,000 pounds ($685,550) of property purchases in England and Northern Ireland.

That full exemption expired at the end of June but buyers in England and Northern Ireland will benefit from a 250,000 pound exemption until the end of September.

    Economic news:

US: Mortgage applications increased last week, as purchasing applications posted their largest increase since early July while mortgage rates edged down.

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) said on Wednesday its average contract interest rate for traditional 30-year mortgages declined to 3.03% from 3.06% in the week ending Aug. 20. The seasonally adjusted market composite index tracking mortgage applications rose 1.6% from a week earlier, reflecting a 0.9% increase in applications to refinance existing loans.

Purchase applications rose 3.0%, the MBA said.

After hitting record lows late last year below 2.9%, mortgage rates climbed in the first part of this year and peaked in the spring. Rates had been drifting lower since, held down in large part by the U.S. Federal Reserve’s extraordinary stimulus measures aimed at helping the economy rebound from the coronavirus pandemic, but ticked higher last week after data showed a hiring surge last month.

Eurozone: The mood among German consumers darkened heading into September as accelerating inflation and rising COVID-19 cases made them more hesitant to buy, a survey showed on Thursday.

The GfK institute said its consumer sentiment index, based on a survey of around 2,000 Germans, dropped to -1.2 points for September, from a revised -0.4 points a month earlier. The reading compared with a Reuters forecast for -0.7.

“Prices have been rising rapidly since the middle of this year. This has a dampening effect on the consumer mood,” GfK consumer expert Rolf Buerkl said in a statement.

Germany’s harmonised annual consumer prices rose 3.1% in July, hitting a 13-year high and fuelling a debate about whether the increase in the cost of living will persist.

An increase in coronavirus infections and a slower pace of vaccinations have also hit consumers’ expectations for the economy and affected their propensity to buy, Buerkl added.

    Economic news:

US: The dollar loitered around multi-week lows on Monday in the wake of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell laying out a slower-than-expected path to rate hikes, as traders’ focus shifted to U.S. jobs figures due on Friday for clues on a tapering timeline.

A storm lashing oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico also lent support to crude prices and to oil-exposed currencies, helping the Norwegian crown drift to a seven-week peak.

The euro touched its highest since early August during Asia trade, at $1.1810, and the yen rose to its strongest since last Wednesday at 109.70 per dollar.

A holiday in Britain on Monday was expected to limit further moves in the London session.

The greenback has fallen since Powell said on Friday that tapering could begin this year but that it wouldn’t directly signal higher rates, as hiking would need the economy to pass a substantially more stringent test.

Eurozone: French consumers were only marginally less confident about their economic prospects in August despite a surge in coronavirus cases and new rules requiring a health pass to enter many retail outlets, a monthly survey showed on Friday.

The INSEE official statistics agency said its monthly consumer confidence index fell to 99 from 100 in July, just short of the average expectation for 100 in a Reuters poll of 10 economists.

The index had peaked at 102 in June – the highest since the pandemic started – as vaccination rates picked up and coronavirus restrictions were eased.

But with France now facing its fourth coronavirus wave as the Delta variant spreads, the government began requiring people earlier this month to show proof of vaccination to enter cafes, restaurants, trains and big shopping malls.

    Economic news:

US: Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Loretta Mester said on Monday that the U.S. economy is recovering strongly but she is not yet convinced that recent inflation readings will be enough to satisfy the price stability goal the U.S. central bank revamped a year ago.

The policymaker said there were upside risks to inflation and that officials need to pay close attention to price changes, but that she expects some inflation metrics will come down after some of the supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic are resolved.

“I’d like to see a little more data before I can arrive and conclude that…we’re at 2% and on the way above 2% for some time,” Mester said during an interview with Reuters on Monday.

Mester’s remarks highlight the growing tension among Fed policymakers as they approach a turning point in their policy without broad agreement on some of the key metrics that define their goals.

Eurozone: The European Commission told the Czech Republic on Monday it would halt the payment of some EU subsidies until the country tightens its laws to guard against conflicts of interest.

The EU executive concluded in an audit released in April that Prime Minister Andrej Babis was in a conflict of interest as final owner of a business empire, mainly under the Agrofert group of companies, that receives EU funding.

Babis has repeatedly insisted he has not broken any laws, having moved his business holdings into two trust funds.

But on Monday, the Commission said it would not reimburse any spending on EU projects claimed by companies held by trust funds for now.

“As long as all the recommendations formulated in the (audit) report are not carried out, we are advising the Czech authorities not to declare expenses that are due for companies whose beneficial owners are trust funds. It’s a warning,” the Commission said.

    Economic news:

US: U.S. single-family home prices in 20 key urban markets rose in June from a year earlier at the fastest pace on record, a closely watched survey showed on Tuesday.

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 19.1% through the 12 months ended in June from an upwardly revised 17.1% in the 12 months through May, marking the largest annual price increase in the survey’s two decades. A Reuters poll of economists had forecast an increase of 18.5%.

On a month-to-month basis, the 20-city composite index rose 1.8% from May, in line with estimates from economists polled by Reuters.

Among the 20 cities, Phoenix, San Diego, and Seattle reported the largest year-over-year gains in June.

A separate report from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) on Tuesday showed its house price index rose a record 18.8% in the 12 months through June. House prices surged 17.4% in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2020.

Eurozone: The euro zone economy is growing quicker than earlier predicted and the European Central Bank will factor this into its policy decisions, ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos told a Spanish newspaper.

As borrowing costs stay extra low and the euro zone has largely avoided the worst of the pandemic’s Delta variant, several policymakers have called for a reduction in emergency bond purchases as soon as next week, in preparation for their end next March.

“The economy is performing better in 2021 than we expected, and this will be reflected in the projections that will be published in the coming days,” El Confidential quoted de Guindos as saying on Wednesday.

“We will have new projections in the coming days and will take our decisions accordingly,” de Guindos said.

On Sept. 9, the ECB will have to decide on the pace of bond purchases for the coming quarter. While de Guindos did not offer a view on the pending move, he argued that the robust recovery paves the way for the eventual withdrawal of copious support.

US: The U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee on Wednesday backed a proposal to increase spending for the Department of defence by about $25 billion, more than the $715 billion proposed by President Joe Biden’s administration.

The vote paved the way for $740 billion budget for the Pentagon next year, since the Senate Armed Services Committee had already backed that spending level in its version of the bill.

The vote in favour of the amendment to the annual National defence Authorization Act, or NDAA, was 42-17, as more than a dozen Democrats joined every committee Republican in favour of higher spending.

Eurozone: British house prices rebounded surprisingly strongly in August, chalking up their second-biggest monthly rise in 15 years after a fall the month before when a pandemic-era tax break began to be phased out.

Mortgage lender Nationwide Building Society said British house prices rose by 2.1% month on month in August after a 0.6% fall in July, well above economists’ forecasts in a Reuters poll for a modest 0.2% increase.

Property purchases slumped in July when a year-long exemption from stamp duty for the first 500,000 pounds ($687,550) of a house purchase ended in England and Northern Ireland.

“The bounce back in August is surprising because it seemed more likely that the tapering of stamp duty relief in England at the end of June would take some of the heat out of the market,” Nationwide chief economist Robert Gardner said.

But the pick-up in prices in August suggests the importance of other factors such as a shortage of houses and demand for more spacious accommodation suited to working from home, which have pushed up prices in Britain and in other countries.

    Economic news:

US: U.S. job growth slowed more than expected in August amid a softening in demand for services and persistent worker shortages as COVID-19 infections soared, but the pace was enough to sustain the economic expansion.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 235,000 jobs last month after surging 1.053 million in July, the Labor Department said on Friday. The unemployment rate fell to 5.2% from 5.4%. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast nonfarm payrolls increasing by 728,000 jobs and the unemployment rate falling to 5.2%.

Eurozone: Top banks in Europe continue to use tax havens to book chunks of profits, a trend that has changed little since 2014 despite country-by-country disclosures becoming mandatory, the EU Tax Observatory said in a report on Monday.

The independent research body, co-financed by the European Union, said disclosures from 36 major European banks showed they booked a total of 20 billion euros ($23.77 billion) or about 14% of total profits, in tax havens, even though few were employed there.

Profits booked by banks in tax havens work out at around 238,000 per employee, compared with 65,000 euros in non-tax havens, the report said.

“This suggests that the profits booked in tax havens are primarily shifted out of other countries where service production occurs,” it added.

Taxes have become a sensitive issue, with cash-strapped governments plugging holes in the economy due to COVID seeking to agree on a common rate for taxing Big Tech, in particular.

Eurozone: German industrial output rose more than expected in July after three monthly drops, data showed on Tuesday, in a sign that factories are slowly overcoming supply bottlenecks which have been holding back a recovery in Europe’s biggest economy.

The Federal Statistics Office said industrial output, including construction and energy, increased by 1.0% on the month after a revised decline of -1.0% in June. A Reuters poll had pointed to a rise of 0.9%.

Output in manufacturing alone jumped by 1.3% as factories churned out more capital and consumer goods. Construction output rose 1.1% while production in the energy sector fell 3.2%.

“After the decline in industrial production in the second quarter, the third quarter got off to a friendly start,” the economy ministry said.

The mighty automobile industry increased its output by 1.9% and the machinery and engineering sector hiked production by 6.9%, the ministry said.

“Even if the supply bottlenecks with semiconductors, which have slowed down production, are likely to persist for a while, the output figures suggest that industry could have overcome its low point,” the ministry added.

    Economic news:

US: Two Federal Reserve officials said on Thursday they would sell their individual stock holdings by the end of the month to address the appearance of conflicts of interest.

Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan and Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren issued statements saying they would invest the proceeds of those sales in diversified index funds and cash savings and would not trade in those accounts as long as they are serving in their roles.

The announcements come after the official’s faced scrutiny over trades they made last year, according to their financial disclosure forms.

Eurozone: The Bank of England will raise borrowing costs by end-2022, earlier than previously thought, and there is a chance it comes even sooner as a solid economic recovery from the pandemic and high inflation may tip its hand, a Reuters poll found.

Like central banks across the world, the BoE slashed borrowing costs at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and also restarted its quantitative easing programme. But as daily deaths from COVID-19 have fallen thanks to extensive vaccination, much of life in Britain has returned to normal.

Bank Rate was seen rising to 0.25% in the fourth quarter of 2022 from its current record low of 0.10%, according to the Sept. 6-9 poll. In an August poll no change was expected until 2023.

Such a move would put the BoE ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve, which is not forecast to raise interest rates until 2023, although the Fed is expected to announce a plan to taper its asset purchases this month, a separate Reuters poll found.
